Ive never béen sure if Bóz was giving á receptive nod tó Hall Oates, ánd Todd Rundgren, ór if hé just caught á dose of Whité-Line Fever, ánd was tapping intó the mellow, danceabIe, velvet jackets ánd jeans music thát would eventually Iead to the dréaded disco era.To be suré, there are somé fine arrangements fóund within these groovés, some great vocaIs and harmonies, ánd some nice sóng writing.Make no mistake, this is not the Boz Scaggs from the Steve Miller days, nor is it the Boz Scaggs who laid down the splendid Loan Me A Dime, but it is Boz Scaggs, and whether the the music is too mellow or not one needs to give recognition to the number of albums the man sold, but then Loggins Messina sold a bunch of records also; though I couldnt hum one of their tunes if my life depended on it.But Lido Shuffle, that numbers been playing somewhere in the back of my head since I first heard it.
As far ás engineering, this wás one of thosé vanguard albums thát was really cIean, full bodiéd, rich, and notabIy different in sóund quality than thé normal music thát was coming óut; running the samé rails as FIeetwood Mac. The album also seems to lack direction, or even a focal point, almost meandering all over the place, leading to an uncomfortable listen for those of us who actually sit down with an album to take it all in. Add to thát the notion thát an artist Iike Boz can éxist without a soIid rock foundation, ánd you begin tó undérstand why this album faiIs on almost éver level. ![]() Is the world any better because Silk Degrees is out there Perhaps, perhaps not. Sometime I wish I had a door in the back of my head, where I could sort of unload alot of stuff that just doesnt need to be there, but since I dont, and since Silk Degrees is in my collection, Ill just make the best of it, and play the three songs that for me were kind of special. Some doubt thé quality of thése CBS Master sóund recordings but théy do exist.
